A breath of fresh air

I am sure that a lot of my regular readers and twitter followers have already heard the fantastic news that Barefoot Books has cut ties with Amazon and are no longer supplying our books to them. Like me, I am sure that this is a huge breath of fresh air. I began my journey with Barefoot Books last year, when I joined as an ambassador and just love the ethos of the company; a grass roots, home based business that support independence and cultural diversity. Barefoot is about the power of community and connection, which can be lost when dealing with big businesses. I realise that Amazon is hugely convenient for many people, as are supermarkets and large chains, but I think it is so important to support small businesses and independents, to ensure that we create growth and diversity within our economy. Our news has been welcomed by many other ambassadors as well as publishers and independent bookstores, here is a selection of the praise we have received;

Thank you for your support to your Ambassadors and your principles’! —@thebarefootgigi
‘Hey @BarefootBooks! Thanks for breaking from Amazon. This indie bookseller applauds you. Proud to sell your books’ —@LilGrnBookworm
‘well done @BarefootBooks – standing on your own bare feet’! —@katereavill
@BarefootBooks that was me waving my virtual pompoms in your direction! Hope that others follow suit’ —@VoicesLibrary
‘Thank you @BarefootBooks for stopping sales to Amazon & supporting the local efforts of our Ambassador Team’ —@marketbarefoot
@barefootbooks That’s a brave, inspiring move, and one that’s much appreciated round these parts’! —@chorltonbkshop
‘Well done @BarefootBooks for pinning your flag to the local and independent masts & ceasing to trade with Amazon’ —@ mrbsemporium

It really is an exciting time for Barefoot Books, with lots of new titles now released, including  the brilliant new additions to our Greek classics range, and more great ideas in the pipeline. Supporting The Lullaby Trust

Little Scribbles has been touched by the strength and love of fellow blogger Jennie over at Edspire, who sadly lost her beautiful daughter, Matilda Mae, when she went to sleep and did not wake up in February this year. I have been following Jennie's story through her blog and her friend, Ghostwriter Mummy's blog so Matilda and her family are often in my thoughts. Matilda Mae was one in 600 babies who die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in the UK each year. And why? We may never know. We may never be able to make sense of such a horrific and tragic death. But what Jennie and all of her blogger friends and beyond want to do is to help the Lullaby Trust in their bid to make the future a lot brighter for many more babies.

The Lullaby Trust funds research into SIDS so that families like Matilda’s can be supported and given answers they so desperately need. The Lullaby Trust also guides and supports families in making the first steps towards growing their family once more, with their Care of Next Infant program. They also provide a bereavement support service and help to educate parents on the importance of safe sleeping. You can find out more about the lullaby trust on their website and can read about all the fabulous fund raising over on Ghostwriter Mummy's blog. Like me, you probably want to get involved and support all involved by giving a little for this very big cause. One great way that you can get involved is by taking a look at the fantastic Auction for Matilda over at Tots100. Lot's of great companies have donated fantastic items for you to bid on, including The Gro Company and Kyna Boutique. I have donated some of our lovely Barefoot Books, including ' Star Seeker ' and ' Up Up Up '.  I will also be donating 30% of all book sales throughout May, that are bought by those who would like to support Jennie and the Lullaby Trust. Simply use the link below, so that we can keep track of sales for Matilda, and you can enjoy a book with your little one whilst helping this great cause.

Barefoot Book of the Month: May

As regular readers know, I am an ambassador for Barefoot Books . Barefoot have lots of amazing books for children and I will be highlighting one as book of the month, that I think you and your little ones would love. For May, I have picked a classic Barefoot story: Catch that Goat! A Market Day in Nigeria.

Chase after a mischievous goat! Ayoka has been left in charge of the family goat but within minutes the goat has vanished. the Nigerian market tale helps youngsters count from ten to one and uses humour to impart a simple message about responsibility.

The book is aimed at ages 3 to 8 years but, if you are anything like me, you will love reading the book yourself! The images are just beautiful with lovely illustrations of family life, babywearing and great colours in and around the market. The book also includes endnotes about life in Nigeria and Yoruba traditions; helping you bring the story alive.
